🟢 UPSC CSE Preliminary Examination Syllabus 2026

The Preliminary Examination consists of two objective-type papers.


📄 Paper I – General Studies (200 Marks)

Topics Covered:

  • Current events of national and international importance

  • History of India and Indian National Movement

  • Indian and World Geography

    • Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India & the World

  • Indian Polity and Governance

    • Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues

  • Economic and Social Development

    • Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives

  • General issues on Environmental Ecology

    • Biodiversity, Climate Change (without subject specialization)

  • General Science

Marks obtained in Paper I are counted for Prelims cutoff.


📄 Paper II – General Studies (CSAT) (200 Marks)

Topics Covered:

  • Comprehension

  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills

  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability

  • Decision-making and problem-solving

  • General mental ability

  • Basic numeracy (Class X level)

    • Numbers, Percentages, Ratios, Time & Distance

  • Data interpretation (Class X level)

    • Charts, Graphs, Tables

Qualifying Paper – Minimum 33% marks required


🔵 UPSC CSE Main Examination Syllabus 2026

The Main Examination consists of 9 descriptive papers, out of which 7 papers are counted for merit.

📝 Paper A – Indian Language (300 Marks)

  • One Indian language from the Eighth Schedule
